WELCOME TO Zavalla
Zavalla, originally called Zavalla Prairie, is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 69 and State Highway 63, twenty-five miles southeast of Lufkin, TX in southeastern Angelina County. It was established in 1900 on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad. The community was named for its location on the impresario grant made to Lorenzo de Zavala. In the early 1900’s timber and cotton were vital to the economy. In 1975, Zavalla was incorporated when population growth associated with Sam Rayburn Lake prompted the organization of a city government. Mr. C.M. Cryer was the first mayor. The first city meeting was held in the Court House Annex.
THINGS TO DO:
COME TO Play
Zavalla is situated near the center west shoreline of Sam Rayburn Lake and is the gateway to multiple recreation areas on the lake. The lake has numerous recreational areas and camping sites. Cassels Boykin Park, which is the largest park in Zavalla, has 265 acres of recreational and camp sites, which include boat ramps, fishing areas, swimming areas, picnic areas, camping and dumping stations. In addition, there are several Big Bass Tournaments held on Lake Rayburn annually.
The city park of Zavalla is built on 5 acres that was donated to the city by Mr. and Mrs. Guy Husband. The park’s pavillion provides a great place to hold birthday parties and special events and park continues to grow. Other points of interest nearby are Boykin Springs Recreational Park with a nature trail and flowing springs, Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation, and the Lufkin Zoo & Museum.

The scope of work being performed is pretty extensive. They will be completely removing the old road material, replace underground infrastructure, replace culverts, improve the drainage in ditches and finally, resurface the streets with 12" of concrete base then finishing out with 3" of asphalt. It is a 330-day project that will create challenges with rerouting traffic and having additional congestion of city space with the heavy equipment needed for the job but we will ALL be thrilled when they have completed the work! We appreciate your patience during this time.
